Ford’s most advanced petrol engines, Ford EcoBoost Engines, are designed to produce performance figures that outmatch others of their size. Their smart engineering allows these powerhouses to fit inside almost any vehicle and adapt to their demands.

Designed for Performance and Efficiency

EcoBoost engines produce more power while burning less petrol. They have a small displacement, typically between 1.0L and 3.5L, but can produce horsepower and torque to match much larger V-6 or V-8 engines. For instance, the 3.5L EcoBoost V-6 engine found in the F-150 Raptor produces 450 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque, which goes toe to toe with some 6.2L V8 engines.

Its low displacement directly translates into a great fuel economy, allowing EcoBoost engines to achieve up to 30 mpg in compact SUVs such as the 2024 Ford Escape.

Combines Three Different Technologies

To achieve extraordinary power for its displacement, EcoBoost engines employ a turbocharger, twin-independent variable camshaft timing, and direct fuel injection.

Turbocharger

A built-in turbocharger increases the power output by increasing the amount of oxygen that enters the engine. It does this by redirecting gases from the exhaust to spin a turbine, which uses a compressor to force the extra air into the engine’s cylinders. More air in the combustion chamber also helps reduce fuel consumption by facilitating better fuel-air mixing.

Variable Valve Timing

Ford’s Twin Independent Variable Camshaft Timing (Ti-VCT) works by adjusting the timing of when the intake/exhaust valves open and shut. Ti-VCT does this by using the engine’s computer (ECU) based on demand to focus on either saving fuel or increasing power output. For instance, if you are driving slowly, the ECU saves fuel by timing the valves to open later.

Direct Fuel Injection

Unlike traditional engines, which mix fuel and air before entering the engine, direct injection sprays fuel directly into the combustion chamber. The engine’s computer (ECU) controls exactly how much fuel is injected into each cylinder precisely where it will be ignited. When you need better performance, the engine increases the fuel intake.

Popular Ford Vehicles with EcoBoost Engines

Numerous Ford vehicles in the 2024 lineup use EcoBoost engines. Each offers extreme fuel efficiency and produces satisfying power.

2024 Mustang Fastback

The 2.3L EcoBoost four-cylinder engine found in the 2024 Mustang Fastback produces 315 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. Its fuel economy is estimated to be 26 mpg.

2024 Ford Ranger XL

The 2.3L Ecoboost four-cylinder under the Ford Ranger XL’s hood has an output of 270 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. The truck can tow up to 7,500 lbs.

2024 Escape Active

A 1.5L EcoBoost three-cylinder engine powering the 2024 Escape Active produces 180 hp and 199 lb-ft of torque. Fuel economy estimates for the compact SUV stand at 30 mpg combined.

EcoBoost technology is also featured in a variety of other cars and trucks available at our dealership. Contact us at Frontier Ford in Anacortes, WA to find a Ford that suits you. Our staff will assist you with any questions you may have.
